I was active in my high school water polo and took only 4 AP classes and one community college course throughout high school. However, I did do lots of community service as my local elementary school throughout all 4 years and was co-president of a company during my senior year as well as held 2 jobs. I think getting involved in some sort of community service and getting a leadership position in it is one of the most important ways to get in as well as maintain good grades.

I transferred to UCLA from CC. I had a GPA of 3.8, was involved in AGS Honors Society, on the Dean's list, and told about the adversity I'd overcome to get into college. College admissions LOVE a "sob story"! Just earn a high GPA, do the minimum required to get that honors society seal on your transcripts, tell them how Uncle Rusty used to make you stand on your toes and sing his favorite gospel tunes while he beat you with a cheese grater -- and they'll admit you anywhere. :)

Very good grades and test scores will only get your foot in the door. Genuine extracurricular activities which capitalize on your strengths will help you stand out. Demonstrating that you will be able to take a hold of your education through hard work, determination, and leadership is essential. Finally, realize that UCLA HIGHLY values diversity, be sure to demonstrate how you would add to or improve the diversity at the school.
